Subcommittees
Six subcommittees (Assessment, Course Development, Faculty Development, Recruitment, Retention, and Sustainability) have been formed to help grant recipients share the knowledge and experiences gained from each project with other institutions, both in and out of the recipient pool.
Assessment
| |
To collect and analyze common data for use in a cross-institutional evaluation/assessment with the goal of determining how well the collection of projects fulfills the Hewlett Foundation’s goals and objectives for the Engineering Schools of the West Initiative (ESWI). The intent is to compare and contrast program design, methodologies, operating assumptions, conceptual frameworks, and the approaches and strategies for problem solving to help determine best practice.
Course Development
| |
To share best practices and lessons learned from the course and module development at the ESWI schools. To also develop web site with links to course/module documents and to hold an annual workshop for sharing best practices and lessons learned.
Faculty Development
| |
To develop and share best practices among the ESWI institutions that 1) help faculty develop effective teaching and balance the demands of teaching, research and service, and 2) affect change in the university reward system so that excellence in teaching is recognized and rewarded.

Sustainability
| |
To work collaboratively to find methods and mechanisms to transition our various Hewlett activities to sustainable, institutionalized funding/support, as the Hewlett Foundation's capital support is phased out in the closing years of our projects. The Committee will identify and prioritize processes that encourage individuals, foundations and industrial partners to give time, talent and funds to sustain the individual school’s ESWI activities.
Student Recruitment
| |
To identify best practices in undergraduate engineering student recruitment across ESWI institutions and provide mechanisms for sharing this knowledge within the cohort as well as nationally.
Recruit/Renention
| |
To define metrics for retention/recruitment and to identify and share best practices for measuring and improving retention among all ESWI institutions.
